Looking Back and Looking Ahead – A Recap

As we move into 2016 and struggle to not write “2015” on everything, I want to say “thank you” on behalf of our community here at Capitol Post. We appreciate the trust you’ve put in us this year, and are incredibly grateful for your loyalty! We hope you feel that Capitol Post is a place…

I’d like to share a few highlights from 2015 and a few things we’re doing to make your experience even better in 2016!

Capitol Post Co-Working Opens for Business:
We opened our co-working / conference space last spring and couldn’t be happier with the look, feel, and energy in the space. We have a number of flexible membership options – all at super reasonable rates with a bunch of resources (subscriptions, Bloomberg, GovWin, SHRM) and amenities specifically tailored to start-ups and businesses. Need a place to focus? Conduct a strategic planning session? Ask pesky questions to our staff and mentors? Need to escape that pile of laundry staring at you from your home office? Our space is guaranteed to make you productive. We want to see you in 2016. . .and will hold you to it! And did I mention ping pong?  Go here to see our membership options and here to join/inquire.

Bunker Labs Press Release Panorama

Bunker Labs DC Launches:
In August, we kicked off the first cohort of our Bunker Labs DC accelerator. Seven companies took the plunge and experimented, validated, and accelerated throughout the five-month program. Led by our Director Ray Crowell, we enjoyed witnessing our entrepreneurs’ “a-ha” moments through a series of critical questions, curriculum, and reflection. We’ve iterated tirelessly on our pilot, and are excited to welcome a new batch of startups next month. Our purposefully designed, world-class programming will be delivered by an expanded team of experts and staff who eat, breathe, and sleep to provide the tools, resources, and support to our start-ups. And did I mention that DC Inno tapped us as, “4 Up-and-Coming DC Accelerators to Watch in 2016?” If interested in applying, please follow this link. Want to access the programming or support the Bunker Labs DC? Consider joining as a member or sponsoring a company. You can contact me email below for more details.

Amazing Programs & Speakers
Okay, we’re usually quite humble, but we like to think that we put on some great programs in 2015! This past summer, we asked fourteen of DC’s best-and-brightest to teach and facilitate workshops and one-on-one sessions across a variety of crucial business areas. As part of our Speaker Series, we listened to the lessons and stories of Chris Taylor, Rosye Cloud, John Gossart, and Tom Leney. For office hours, Bob Podzius and other experts met with dozens of start-ups and companies throughout the year. We launched our Book Club and studied the lessons of some of the top business books to include The Lean Start-Up, Rework, and Zero to One. Because we have a staff that is passionate about the veteran business community here in DC, let us know who you want to hear and what you want to learn in 2016 – we’re all ears.

Fun, Valuable Events to Connect Veterans
A big challenge we often hear is that veterans need better local networks and connections to great people – and in a way that feels genuine. Our goal is to create a network that feels human, connected, and thriving. One way we do that is through events. The Bunker Labs DC Launch at Light Horse, the annual Veterans Day Eve Social at Port City Brewery, the snowmageddon “Night out at the Caps” with Team Red, White and Blue (RWB), and our Evening with Capitol Post Social were just a few of the top events. . .and we’ve got the smiling faces in photos to prove it!

Shining a Spotlight on Local Success
Every day in DC, there are tens of thousands of veterans and spouses actively plugging away to do their best. Each month, we enjoy shining our spotlight on some of DC’s most interesting veterans, businesses, and non-profits to hear what’s working for them after taking off the uniform. Whether it’s designing neck ties, helping others, or creating live TV streaming, we’re amazed each month at the gems among us. We look forward to hearing more amazing stories in 2016.

Supporting our Local Businesses and Partners
One of our favorite aphorisms is “a rising tide lifts all boats,” and we can’t agree more. We’ve enjoyed putting on some great events and supporting some awesome partners in 2015 to include: Dog Tag Bakery, MOAA, the Station Foundation, Code of Support Foundation, Team RWB, National Military Spouses Network, Veterans Curation Program, and Vets in Tech. We’re all about community and establishing strong ties with the best organizations.

Awesome Sponsors
We simply couldn’t do what we do without the support of some amazing sponsors. Thank you to Fluet, Huber + Hoang, Long & Foster, SunTrust Foundation, USAA, Capital One, and OEA for your incredible support this past year. If you are interested in getting involved to sponsor Capitol Post, one of our Bunker Labs DC start-ups in the next cohort, or an event, please contact me at my email below.

In closing, as Benjamin Franklin said, “Well done is better than well said.” And with that, I’ll close my thoughts on our whirlwind year with a hope for a “well done” 2016. Come out and join us and see the great things happening at Capitol Post and Bunker Labs DC.

Happy New Year,
Emily
